The Dole Plantation
From fruit-stand beginnings in 1950 to being one of the most popular visitor attractions on Oahu, Dole Plantation has the heart of many of Hawaii’s visitors. When founder, James Drummond Dole, arrived in the islands after graduating from Harvard University, he transformed the pineapple into an American household staple, dominating Hawaii’s pineapple industry, and creating the famous Pineapple Plantation.
Today, visitors can dive into the history of Hawaii’s favorite fruit by visiting the Dole Plantation garden and factory tour / train ride. They also have the opportunity to see a wide variety of crops grown on the North Shore of Oahu. During the tours, learn about life in plantation villages and the history of laborers from all across the world who came to work in Hawaii in the sugar and pineapple fields. The Plantation also features the Dole Pineapple Garden Maze which was founded in 1998. The maze is made up of Hawaiian plants including the hibiscus, heliconia, croton, and agapanthus — In 2001, it was named the largest Maze in the world.
